According to Leroux, a young Christine was discovered at the Ljimby fair by Professor Valerius, who happened to hear her sing and her father playing the violin and immediately took them with him to Gothenburg. He helped train her and provided for her education. After her father died she moved to Paris with Madame Valérius who lived in a little apartment on Rue Notre-Dame-des-Victoires , who treated her as a daughter, Professor Valerius was dead by this point. Madame Valerius leaves to the North with Raoul and Christine at the end of the novel.
